Ron DeSantis, the Republican governor of Florida, is using Dr. Anthony Fauci in his reelection campaign. The popular GOP governor is trolling Dr. Fauci with a pair of flip-flops in a fresh ad supporting his campaign.
John McCormick, a Wall Street Journal national political reporter, tweeted a video of the new ad. It aired first on One America News. The ad begins with these words, “Coming to a beach near you.” Then, it shows a few black-and-white clips of Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Chief Medical Advisor to the President. He is making what seem to be contradictory messages about the policies that he is endorsing to fight the spread of COVID-19.
Biden’s pandemic doctor says that people should be wearing masks and not walking around without them. He says that masks work, and, then, in another clip, Fauci says that people who are fully vaccinated do not need to wear masks. The next clip has him saying that people should still wear masks even if they have been fully vaccinated…flip-flop.
The ad moves to Dr. Fauci speaking about keeping children in school. At one point, he challenges that people better be careful before they bring their children back, and, later, he argues that the default position should be to try as hard as possible to keep children in school.
And then, there is the discussion of social distancing. In one clip, Fauci says that there was no need to change anything that you are doing on a day-to-day basis. But then, he calls for a dramatic diminution of personal interaction.
The ad says, “Dr. Fauci, he flips, he flops, but he can’t stop freedom in Florida.” The screen focuses on a pair of red, DeSantis-branded flip-flops. And just when you think the ad is over, it pans away revealing a message written in the sand: “FAUCI CAN POUND SAND.”
The very end gives an image and a link to DeSantis’ campaign website where his supporters can pre-order the flip-flops. They are red with a blue strap and they have “Freedom over Fauci” printed on the outer straps. The DeSantis campaign logo is printed on the heel, and the soles have “Fauci can pound sand” cut into them. That means that everywhere you walk, that message will be pressed into the sand along the beach.
This isn’t the first time that DeSantis has taken the offensive against Dr. Fauci. He lashed out at him on a number of occasions. In recent interviews, the governor went after both Fauci and President Biden’s administration for their singular focus on wearing masks and vaccines as the only treatments for COVID-19.
“Most of these other governors and the people like Fauci and the federal leadership, they basically say, ‘Get a shot, wear a mask,’ and they never talk about treatment. And we’ve really embraced treatment because that’s just the reality of what we’re facing,” DeSantis explained to Mark Levin of Fox News.
And flip-flops are not the only merchandise you can purchase from the campaign website. There is a shirt available that thrashes Democratic politicians for imposing lockdowns on their citizens and then taking trips to Florida themselves.
The top of the shirt says “Escape to Florida,” and the bottom of the shirt says, “The LOCKDOWN LIBS Tour.” And on the back of the shirt, you have the names, homes, and Florida locations of the Democratic politicians who have made their way from home state lockdowns to the freedom and sun of Florida.
The list of politicians includes Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer who went to West Palm Beach; Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney who went to Ft. Lauderdale; New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy who went to Orlando; and CNN Anchor Don Lemon who went to Palm Beach.
The bottom of the back of the shirt states, “WE DON’T BLAME YOU… WE LIKE FREEDOM, TOO.”
